#Janathon Day 31 - It's over

For the final day of #Janathon I had intended to runch but a coffee date with the girls won out over a rainy run.

This evening I completed my Kathryn Budig Aim True DVD. I love the variety of postures and the playful sequencing disguises a tough workout. I am so excited to be attending a workshop with Kathryn this summer at TriYoga, I am especially looking forward to the Arm Balances session, kick your feet up.

#Janathon Day 30 - Letting go

To practice yoga you need not only a flexible, strong body but also mind. The hardest lesson I have been learning in yoga is to trust, my teacher, my body and my mind.

#Janathon Day 28 - Lunch Breaks at work

#Janathon has got me thinking a little more creatively about how I use my time and making the most of every day.

The first half of January I was overwhelmed with the choice of activities and found myself doing a little too much, at the expense of the husband and my sleep! This half the month I have been working out in shorter sessions, and maximising my rest and relaxing time.

Today I went to the gym in my lung break, I'm lucky to work on flexi-time and as I am on the University Campus I have the Surrey Sports Park just a stones throw away. It was great to get in the gym while it was quiet, I spent 10 minutes warming up on the cross trainer, before moving to the weights machines. I then completed 6 minutes on the incline stepper before winding down with some core work. Was good to feel the buzz of a good workout all afternoon.

#Janathon Day 27 - Running Mojo

After Saturday's failed 10k at Glow in the Park I was feeling a bit blah about running. Every run recently has felt heavy and slow and just not as fun as it used to be. Turns out all I needed was a new route and a little gossip, out for my weekly run date with Evita we hit the roads and ran through to the next town over and completed a nice 8km loop in around 55minutes (including waiting for the trains at the level crossing).

Good to have the running legs back again.

#Janathon Day 26 - Stretches and spring cleaning

Today was spent having a proper spring clean, I was intending only to get the Dyson out and then call it at day but a hour after that I'd pulled out the oven and was mopping behind it, after thoroughly cleaning all our kitchen cupboards. Actually fear I may have lost my mind! Why does it look messier than when I started? Looks like il have fun sorting my clean but messy house out this week!

In between being a domesticated wife I forgot my plans to run, however managed to find space and time on my mat, starting with some sun sals and then messing around with a little flow based on our class on Thursday. I really do enjoy the variations within flow classes, three legged dogs especially, and one day I will conquer the standing split.

#Janathon Day 25 - Attempted 10k

Tonight we ran the Votwo Glow in the Park run. Due to heavy rainfall and 50mph winds during the afternoon the course was a little rough around the edges. The rolling course would of been tough even in fair weather, however with the recent down pour the course was ankle deep churned mud.

We struggled down a steep decline and we then met a sharp incline, with the coating of mud we could barely sustain a slow jog, thankfully by this point Evita was laughing, we decided short after 3km that we would run to the finish and bow out.

Although we didn't finish our planned race it was both Evita and my first timed 5k, so a new PB.

Glow in the Park - Mud and a podium place

One of the unexpected positives from running has been the support and friendship of those supporting me, through existing friendships and with the Team Naturally Run girls on Facebook and twitter. When my colleague Evita first asked me if I would like to go for a run last summer I didn’t think it would become the regular training run and we would be covering on average 10k while chatting away.

We agreed that we would find a fast and flat road course for her first 10k timed run, but in my excitement for finding the LeahGlow in the Park run at a local Park (Polesdon Lacey), I neglected to check the course information and it turns out that Polesdon Lacey is neither flat, nor road!

January has been just wet non-stop, and when it hasn’t been raining it has been windy, like proper rip up your fences windy (our poor fence!), the morning of the run, it poured with rain, and according to race organisers they lost most of the course markers throughout the day, replacing these little less than an hour before the run was due to start.

photo 1

With our regulatory required head torches, and not so required neon outfits we made our way to the start line, with over 400 runners expected and 99 running on the night it was a quiet start-line, everyone bunched up close trying to bounce a little warmth into cold legs. This was the first event that I have ever been to without a warm-up, just a quick word from the organisers on course safety and we were off!

photo 4

Before we had even hit the 1k marker I had started apologising to Evita for my mis-sell of the event. The path had quickly turned to trail, then to a mix of grass and mud, our road trainers were not providing the traction required for the mixed wet terrain. Around the 2k marker a steep rocky decline had slowed the pack in front to a walk, and we held hands as we clambered the steps down. It was somewhere between 3-4k that I thought maybe I would not be running the full 10k, which was confirmed when both Evita and I were on our hands and knees trying to stay upright up a hill, which can only be accurately defined as a small mudslide (I so wish I had taken pictures), the only thing keeping me moving up that hill was the need to keep ahead of Evita, whom I was certain would throttle me if she caught up!

We made sure to run the final 1k, and a token sprint finish, before bowing out of the second lap! Although for a short while, we were on the podium!

#Janathon Day 24 - Rest Day

Just so tired...twelve days of work in a row is not ideal prep for the planned gym session, instead we will snuggle down and rest.

#Janathon Day 22 - Back to the gym

Managed to escape the office for a long lunch break at Surrey Sports Park. A hour workout included warm-up on the cross trainer, weights including chest press, pull down, delt row and leg press.

I am feeling strong and motivated, seeing the difference in my strength increase with each workout, my initial leg press sets early January maxed out at 35kg and today I pressed 3 sets of 10 at 75kg.

I finished up my workout with a short 6 minute hill climb and core work before a quick shower and dash back to the office.

#Janathon Day 21 - Yourshape

Today I had my bag packed for the gym and planned a good hour before yoga practice and some time on 'The Grid' foam rollering, but as I left my bag at home I decided to revisit Yourshape on XBox 360 Kinect.

After re-calibrating the personal trainer with my current stats I completed a 30 minute boxing workout, I had forgotten what a good workout it was and was soon pretty sweaty.

#Janathon Day 20 - Back on it

Due to a weekend of non-stop meetings in London, I neglected my planned Saturday long run in favour of Wagamama's and wine, and didn't tube across town to a yoga class I had intended to take. But tonight I managed to lace up the trainers for a 7km run, a mix of talking pace running (7 minute km) and sprints reminded me how much better I feel after a workout, back to the gym tomorrow for me!

#Janathon Day 16 - Good intentions

The alarm was set for 6.30am with plans for a sunrise run with the husband. Good intentions and all we slept through till 8.00am, barely managing to drag my butt to work for 9.30am.

At least I got nice and sweaty in yoga tonight, every day I'm feeling a little stronger and lifting a little easier, now only if I could work out chaturanga dandasana.

#Janathon Day 15 - Not so yogi

Tonight's Ashtanga flow class was a tough class mentally, I was in a jealous little mood watching other twisty pretzels, forgetting how far I have come, how strong my body is and how proud I am of my nearly headstand.

Tomorrow's practice I dedicate to me, I will be present.

#Janathon Day 14 - Positivity

With last nights long run clocked at well over 11.5km I have a new feeling of positivity, that sneaking thought of a 1/2 marathon is pushing forward in my mind, il have to deal with that later!

Tonight I had a great sweaty session at Surrey Sports Park, including 30 minutes combined on the Cross Trainer and the static bike and a mix of machine and free weights, feeling nice and sore!

#Janathon Day 12 - Runnings routes

Sometimes it's nice to revisit a route you haven't run in a while, to see the progress you have made as you re-run the hills that once were too steep. And sometimes it's just as hard as the first time you ran it!

#Janathon Day 10 - Feeling not quite right

I am not feeling 100% this evening but #Janathon and #Jantastic were the motivation I needed to ignore the cramps for 20 minutes and just get outside. Wrapped up warm and bright with my head torch and many reflective panels I set about the side streets.

I love where we live, although it's a little rough around the edges it's a quiet place and I feel safe running the roads and paths on the outskirts of town, I took a quick route up and down the hills (they may not really be classed as hills but for the purpose of tonight they were as much incline as I could face) and quickly looped back home at 3.35km. It wasn't the speediest or the furthest but it was a nice little run and now I feel justified to have a snuggle on the sofa with the cat before a little yoga stretch session later.

#Janathon Day 9 - Full Body Gym Workout

Today I met with my fitness instructor at Surrey Sports Park to run through my current workout and some additional excercises to include further focus on my legs and core, this will give me a complete workout for fat loss and strength building.

To warm-up I completed a 10 minute interval pattern on the cross-trainer before completing 2 sets of 8-12 reps on the Chest Press, Seated Row, Pulldown and Leg Press machines (remembering to rest for 45 seconds between each set). To keep my heart-rate up I moved to the Summit trainer/stepper and completed a 6 minute mixed hill climb.

Moving into the free weights and conditioning zone, I completed 2 sets of front squats with a 5kg corebag and 2 sets of Squat & Press with 4kg dumbells, before jumping onto a static cycle for a 8 minute mixed hill climb, maintaining around 80-90rpm, by this point I was lovely and 'glowing' (a sweaty mess!).

To complete my workout, we focused on core, completing 2 sets of 12-15 reps of Oblique crunch with knee lifts, forearm and side planks, focusing on maintaining correct form.

#Janathon Day 8 - Rest Days and back to class

After yesterday's circuit training my glutes and thighs were not happy, so in totally out of the normal behaviour I thought I would have a rest (ish) day. Of course I couldn't neglect #janathon and with #21daysofyoga on only day 2, a nice sweaty hour of Ashtanga was just what the doctor ordered.

#Janathon Day 7 - Circuit Training

Before Christmas I had been feeling strong in circuits, that I was making progress every session. Today I honestly thought I was going to hurl! Thankfully our instructor welcomed us back with a slightly shorter session, 3 rounds instead of 4. Next week will definitely be a challenge. #Janathon Day 7 - Circuit Training

A late recap - Festive 10k and the Bride Elf!

I wanted to find a run that was a little special for my final 10k of 2013 but was loathed to run in a Santa Suit after reading about Leah’s run last Christmas. Fuelling my indecisive nature was that most December runs were 5k or didn’t have a medal (it’s all about the bling for me!)

Leah had arranged a Christmas get together to run the Cafod Nativity Run. It’s an annual run, held on Clapham Common and this year included a nativity toddle, a 5k and new for 2013 a 10k.

The selling point for this race was not only the chance to Run with the Team Naturally Run girls, to meet some of the bloggers who I have been following for the last year or so (although I have to admit that it felt slightly like I was meeting celebrities) but to top it off, Leah has arranged medals for us all, our Team Naturally Run Bling.

Cafod encourage runners to dress in a Festive or Christmas outfit, we saw some amazing costumes including a 6ft Christmas tree. Leah had also arranged a group costume, we were all decked out in matching Elf Costumes, and Lucy’s boyfriend Glen even had a little matching Elf costume! Leah’s costume was adorned with a few extras including a tiara, a sash and wand, as her lovely boyfriend (fiancĂ©) had proposed.

Elf 1

The run itself was a mix of paths, tracks and little trails in the park, I hadn’t realised that it was meant to be shaped like a snowflake! It was a nice run for our spectators as we doubled back several times to the bandstand and it meant Tim and Katy were able to get some great pictures! (the pictures are great, me not so much!)

Elf 3

I ran most of the run with Leah, Lauren and Charlie, it was really fun running with a group and in costume, especially as every time we passed a marshal they congratulated Leah the ‘Bride Elf’, I think most presumed it was a Hen Party!

Around 7.5k I slipped back into a slightly slower more comfortable pace, the heavy felt costume was a little much and I was struggling to keep cool at a faster pace.

I crossed the finish line in 1:05:01, I had been beating myself up on the last km and knew I was going to be the last elf to finish, but as I approached the finish line the girls were all cheering and I felt like amazing, it was a new experience to run with a big group and I was delighted to finish, be thrust a hot chocolate, some water and a mince pie before joining the rest of the girls for a group photo, Team Naturally Run won Best Group Costume!

#Janathon Day 6 - Squats, presses and a not so speedy run

Another workout today at the Sports Park, following my workout plan from my lovely Instructor I completed a 8 minute high speed warm up on the cross trainer, 2 sets of 8/12 reps on Chest Press, Dips and Lat pull downs and 6 minutes on the stepper before making my way to the functional training zone for squats, plank, jumping squats and crunches.

After the gym a quick costume change for my first official #Jantastic run, as I was a little tired I only ran just shy of 4km but was happy to be out running with a friend for an overdue chat!

My thoughts on January Challenges

If you read my blog or follow me on twitter you will know I started January with #Janathon, and will be upping the challenge with both #Jantastic and #21daysofyoga tomorrow.

All three challenges actually for together, for #Jantastic il be running 3 times a week, for #Janathon I need to do something every day, be it a workout, a run or a little restorative yoga practice.

I have been building a daily yoga practice for some time now, for me #21daysofyoga is all about giving up some time and focusing on my heart and head. Every now and again I forget that yoga isn't about being the stretchiest pretzel in the hippest lulu gear, and actually yoga for me is about the quiet head space and clarity after practice, knowing the time is for me and my practice is only for me.

I'm using this January to focus on finding space and time for me, and I am hoping January will set the tone for 2014.

#Janathon Day 5 - Gym workouts and running, finding motivation

A couple of weeks before Christmas I was in a rut with the gym. I knew roughly what I should be doing but was struggling to mangage more than 30 minutes before trying to convince the husband I was finished.

We're lucky to have a fab gym linked to our work, the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford has a large fully equipped gym, competition length swimming pool and a range of classes.

I spoke with the gym trainers and arranged a session to design a personalised workout plan, focusing on key goals of weight-loss, upper body and core strength. In the session we ran through setting realistic goals which for me is focusing on building strength and steady weight loss. We also worked though some nutritional advice and motivation techniques and set a target of 3 workouts per week plus yoga every day.

5 days into January and #Janathon, I'm feeling motivated and strong, I have been working out how to build some time into every day to focus on my health and fitness.

Today I completed my Fit Linxx workout, including short cardio bursts on the cross trainer, stepper and static cycle and reps for a full upper body workout, plus some squats to kick my butt into gear!

After our sweaty workout the husband fancied a little run outside, so we laced up and headed over to our local favourite, Caesars Camp military training ground, used for vehicle testing and training it's a great mix of trails and woodland and has a few killer hills.

Rounding out Day 5 with a good cup  of tea and a movie (plus maybe a chocolate chip cookie).

#Janathon Day 4 - Nike Training Club

Why started last night as good intentions for an early start at the gym, ended up as a lazy morning catching up on some of our favourite shows.

With #Janathon as motivation, I had a look through the Nike Training Club (NTC) app and completed a 45 minute strength workout.

I have used the app for the last 6 months as a tool when in the gym but have never run the app during a workout. As I was at home I felt more comfortable on the moves I usually skip at the gym, such as kicks, high knees and froggers. The workout really kicked my butt, getting my heart rate higher than most at home workouts, plus like Nike Running the allure of 'winning' badges will definitely see me integrate NTC into my regular workouts.

NTC is available to download via the AppStore on iTunes and android.

#Janathon Day 3 - Bedtime yoga

After a lovely few days socialising and relaxing with friends in Scotland, we returned today, a 7.5 hour drive plus stops left little time for exercise. A few rest stop stretches on the way and then a short and sweet bedtime yoga sequence via Youtube.

I loved this sequence on Day 29 of the 30 day yoga challenge with DoYouYoga.com, why not sign up and they will send a free 10-20 minute daily yoga sequence via e-mail.

#Janathon Day 2 - Running on a wee Scottish holiday

Woke up this morning feeling a little heavy and lethargic, probably due to the wonderful hospitality of our friends in Scotland (everything has been so delicious!)

With a quick breakfast of porridge and a cuppa tea to wake me up I set out to the Devon path.

The path runs from Tillicoultry through to Dollar, with beautiful view across the Ochilles.

Today's run was a slow but comfortable pace, slow enough to take pictures and take in the views.

#Janathon Day 1 - Glen Alva

Janathon had to start a little slower than I had anticipated. After a heavy but delicious Scottish breakfast of sausage and tattie scone rolls, we headed outside to get some fresh air and clear our heads.

We went for a brisk walk round Glen Alva, before a little rain set in and we headed back for a New Years Day roast.
